Apple Pie

Course: Dessert
Cuisine: American
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 6 cup apples peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 2 TBS flour
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 TBS butter
  • 1 Prepared Pie Crust

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel, core and slice apples into 1 inch pieces and put into a large bowl with water. Add lemon juice to keep apples from browning.
  • In a separate small bowl, thoroughly mix flour, salt, sugars, cinnamon and nutmeg. Drain apples and pour sugar mixture over apples and mix well. Put one prepared pie crust in pie pan. Put apple mixture in the pie pan. Cut butter into thin pieces and distribute over top of apples. Cover with top pie crust, crimping along the edges.
  • Cut several small slices in top crust so steam can escape. Sprinkle sugar and cinnamon over top. Cover edges with foil to prevent burning. Place in oven for 25 minutes with foil on edges. Remove foil and cook another 20-25 minutes.

Notes

How to Freeze Apple Pie: Line a sturdy pie plate with foil, molding to its shape, and put the apple filling (prepared above) in it. Put in freezer until frozen solid. Wrap with more tin foil and store in a zip lock bag. Store in the freezer for up to a year.
How to Bake Apple Pie from frozen state: Line the same pie plate that was used to freeze the filling with an unbaked pie crust. Place the frozen apples into the pie plate. Dot with butter and put on the top crust. Once you have the edges sealed, brush the top with milk and sprinkle with a little bit of sugar and cinnamon. Cut some slits in the upper crust.
Loosely cover the pie with with foil and bake it at 375 degrees for 30 minutes. Then remove the foil and bake for another 40-55 minutes, until the crust is brown and the filling is bubbly.
