PCT-Timberline to Columbia Gorge, OR August 2005

Celebrating 50th birthday on the trail

Backpackers: Ed Tucker, Brian Lewis, Carl Fisher

August 13, 2005 Miles 4: Brian and Carl met Ed at Timberline Lodge at 4:00pm, he had already been on the trail for several days. We had a meal at the Lodge (it was so-so) and then hit the trail at 5:30pm. Hike 4 miles to the junction of the PCT with Paradise Trail junction.

August 14, 2005 Miles 13: On the trail at 7:00am and did river crossings of the Sandy and Muddy Rivers. Nothing dangerous but the Muddy River was the least improved. Finished the day at Lolo Pass. We had to walk almost ½ mile to pump water from a very small stream. Water had been sparse on the trail after our crossings. Overhead power lines close to camp and two gravel roads that were pretty busy for being in the middle of nowhere. Carl turned 50 years old today!

August 15, 2005 Miles 15: Hit the trail at 7:00am when the temperature was 72 degrees. Early in the day we had some nice views of Lost Lake, Mt Adams and Mt St Helens. Made it to camp at Wathum Lake at 3:30pm after doing the most miles in one day for Carl. We went for a refreshing swim and Ed caught a crayfish which we ate with supper.

Crayfish added some more protein to our evening meal.

August 16, 2005 (15 miles) – We chose to not hike the official PCT and instead took the Eagle Creek trail which has several wonderful waterfalls.  The best waterfall is Tunnel Falls where the trail leads behind the water fall.  The trail was essentially downhill all day with excellent tread.  We exited the trail, called a previously arranged taxi service who directed us to go to the entrance of the Bonneville dam and they would be there in two hours.  This required a two mile road walk and going under the highway.
